Statement

Though I was heavily influenced by my father’s work and studied realism painting in college, I began my artistic career as an abstract painter. It wasn’t until I moved from San Francisco to the small Bay Area town of Vallejo that I became inspired to take up photorealism painting again. The stucco houses, shabby strip malls and all the trappings of this working class town remind me of the realist movement in California in it’s heyday of which I am very fond.

The scenes I paint are often found in people’s driveways and front yards so I don’t spend a lot of time trying to compose the perfect photograph. Rather,I take “snapshots” from the window of my pickup truck as I drive through the streets and neighborhoods of Vallejo. I believe that this method of gathering imagery for my paintings gives my work a spontaneity and energy that I couldn’t achieve if I tried to contrive the scene otherwise.

My paintings generally have a central object of interest but the surrounding artifacts are every bit as important to the overall narrative. These secondary elements not only help to to inform the central object, they give the scene a sense of place and time which is essential in my work.

I am aware that one might want to find social commentary in my work and that’s fine but I make no conscious effort to put that forward. I’m much more interested in the image overall and the artistic process of transforming the 3 dimensional world into 2 dimensions through the marks I choose to make on the painting surface – In other words, I paint these things because I like to paint these things.
